British Airline, Jet2 is Hiring Hundreds of New Cabin Crew – But Be Warned: It Will Cost You

British leisure airline, Jet2 is set to embark on a massive recruitment drive with hundreds of new cabin crew positions available, as well as flight crew and ground staff vacancies.  In total, the airline plans to hire 1,700 new staff with recruitment roadshows taking place across the UK in August and September.

The new cabin crew roles will take up the bulk of the recruitment campaign, with the airline set to hire 900 new flight attendants.  Jet2 is looking for candidates who can deliver a “VIP service to customers” while providing a “consistently high level of safety.”

The news comes as Jet2 expands capacity on its short haul European network by 13%.  The airline operates a fleet of 74 aircraft, mostly Boeing 737’s and is currently in the process of expanding its fleet with 34 brand new 737-800 next generation aircraft.  So far, the airline has taken delivery of 16 new jets with a further 18 to be delivered by 2019.

Jet2 has a number of cabin crew bases across the UK, based in Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Edinburgh, East Midlands, Birmingham, London Stansted and Belfast.  The airline also has bases at Glasgow and Edinburgh airports with cabin crew based in Scotland expected to travel between the two locations.  Additionally, there are a small number of roles available in Alicante, Spain.

If you want to find out more about what Jet2 is offering and speak with current cabin crew, the airline is holding a series of roadshows across the UK over the next couple of months.  Although these aren’t technically Open Day’s (where you can apply for the job straight away), they’ll still be a great opportunity to learn more about working with Jet2:

  • Radisson Blu Hotel, Manchester Airport: Thursday 31st August (10:00 – 17:30)
  • Mercure Leeds Parkway, Leeds: Friday 1st September (10:00 – 17:30)
  • Hilton Birmingham Metropole, NEC Birmingham: Wednesday 6th September (10:00 – 17:30)
  • Jurys Inn, East Midlands Airport: Thursday 7th September (10:00 – 17:30)
  • Mercure St Pauls, Sheffield: Thursday 7th September (07:30 – 19:30)
  • The Normandy Hotel, Glasgow: Tuesday 12th September (10:00 – 17:30)
  • Holiday Inn, Edinburgh: Wednesday 13th September (10:00 – 17:30)
  • Hotel Novotel, Newcastle Airport: Friday 22nd September (10:00 – 17:30)

Jet2 is the third largest airline in the UK and was recently named as the Best Airline in the UK by Tripadvisor.  It also won the Travellers Choice Award for the Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe.  Speaking about the future for Jet2, the airline’s chief executive, Steve Heapy, commented:

“It has been an exciting year for Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, and we are delighted to be creating so many opportunities to join our award-winning team. If you care passionately about looking after customers, we would love to see you at one of our upcoming roadshows and we look forward to welcoming you on board.”

If you think this could be the role for you then you’ll need to submit your application via Jet2’s official careers website.  You need to be at least 18 years old, 5’2″ tall of over and hold an EU passport.  Shortlisted candidates will face a telephone interview, before being invited to an Assessment Day and Final Interview.

Here’s what else Jet2 is looking for in it’s cabin crew:

  • Able to meet in-flight sales targets
  • Committment to deliver “excellent” customer service
  • Able to think on your feet
  • Committed to safety and security

Unfortunately, Jet2 is one of a growing list of airline’s that actually expect new recruits to pay for their own training.  At the moment, that will set back candidates £700 (€759) for the roughly three-week course.  It’s also worth pointing out that all the training takes place at Jet2’s base in Bradford – You’ll be expected to pay for your own accommodation and transport during the course.

Finally, Jet2 is primarily a leisure airline and as such its busiest during the summer months.  If you get offered the job, the offer will be for a summer contract so you might have to find alternative employment during the winter months.
