Just over a week ago, we reported that American Airlines planned to hold a virtual careers fair for aspiring flight attendants who wanted to find out a little bit more about what the job involved, what it took to become a flight attendant and more about the application process. The thinking was that if American Airlines was doing this then surely a recruitment drive would start at some point soon.
And that’s exactly what has happened – the application window actually opened on July 18 and is currently open-ended, although that means that American might close the process as soon as they have enough applications so don’t waste any time if you think this is the opportunity for you.
American is looking for trainee flight attendants to join its team at bases across the United States – this includes its main hub at Dallas Fort Worth as well as 12 other cities including San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angles, Chicago and New York.
The airline says it is “looking for the best” and there will certainly be a lot of competition. In fact, if the process is anything like Delta Air Lines, then less than 1% of candidates will actually be hired! Thankfully, despite some recent horror stories we’ve heard about the flight attendant profession, it’s still a fantastic career that offers a very attractive lifestyle and benefits package.
But successful candidates will first have to complete up to six weeks of (unpaid) training at American’s headquarters in Dallas. To give you a better idea of what this training is like, American produced this video of exactly what happens…
You’ll need to either be a U.S. citizen or in possession of valid visa to apply for this position via the official American Airlines recruitment website. You’ll also need to meet the following minimum criteria:
- At least 20-years old
- High school diploma or GED equivilant
- At least two years of customer service experience or a college education
- Able to speak and read English fluently
American Airlines is looking for candidates with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as problem solving, and complaint resolution skills. You must be willing to present a professional image and it goes without saying that you’ll need to be able to work all kinds of shifts and travel across the entire American Airlines route network.
