Whether it’s your favourite snail-infused Korean skincare mask or maybe some Korean barbeque, there’s no doubt that South Korean culture has been having a massive influence around the world of late. And there’s one South Korean export that is really making heads turn (and ears twitch) – K-Pop or Korean pop music.
Despite recent controversies, especially the burnout caused by overwork and gruelling schedules, South Korean music houses continue to churn out boy and girl-bands at an alarming rate. And the world continues to lap up the catchy melodies and slick choreography that K-Pop delivers us.
As the K-Pop frenzy has grown in popularity, South Korean pop artists have scored hits on the Billboard 100 at least eight times since 2009. Newly created band SuperM – a seven-member boyband is already planning a North American tour having played a concert in Los Angeles despite the fact the band was only formed earlier this year.
But SuperM is about to get a helping hand in its quest for global domination – the band is now featuring in the world’s first K-Pop inspired in-flight safety video for Korean Air. The video even features a specially created song, Let’s Go Everywhere, which will be released as a single on November 18th.
“Safety does not have to be serious or boring,” explained a Korean Air spokesperson about the collaboration. “We hope to deliver clear safety messages to our passengers through the brand-new safety video,” the spokesperson continued.
The video was released on Korean Air’s official YouTube channel and first played on Korean Air flight KE621 between Seoul Incheon and Manila this morning. The airline hopes the music video safety demo will “effectively grab” the attention of passengers to convey important safety information while also helping to deepen the influence of South Korean culture.
Korean Air also released a behind the scenes video of the making of the safety video:
“The safety video features a mix of five music genres: hip-hop, R&B, electronic, deep house and synth-pop. By mixing the various genres into one song, the video aims to capture the attention of a wide range of passengers,” the airline explained.
So excited is Korean Air about its new video that it’s even organising a video sharing event, with model airplanes featuring a SuperM livery going to 100 lucky winners. All proceeds from the single sale will go towards the Global Citizen campaign which aims to end extreme poverty, climate change and global inequality.
Obviously, Korean Air isn’t the first airline to introduce an all singing and dancing safety video but it is the first K-Pop safety video and that’s an important distinction.
