German flag carrier Lufthansa has just unveiled a new look for tens of thousands of frontline employees, including pilots, flight attendants, and gate agents, and the airline has chosen none other than the iconic German designer Hugo Boss to create the new look.

The uniform, which was unveiled on Friday at a special event in Frankfurt, has been created to mark Lufthansa’s 100th anniversary, which is taking place this year, and it appears that the airline has very much sought to celebrate its heritage with this new uniform rather than showcase a radical new look.

Lufthansa’s new uniform features largely the same color pallete as before.
New tailoring and a few original uniform pieces make up the new collection.

What has been created is very much an evolution of the existing Lufthansa uniform that employees have worn for a quarter of a century, since being introduced in 2001, which features tailored suits in a dark navy colorway and accessories like canary yellow neck scarves.

The new Hugo Boss uniform, meanwhile, features the same colors and silhouettes but with updated cuts and some new pieces, like a short cape jacket for female flight attendants, and a dark blue dress shirt for male staff.

Around 40 new uniform pieces are being introduced, with the initial rollout set to get underway from September 2026.

Unlike many airlines that have introduced new uniforms in recent years, the process at Lufthansa has been remarkably quick and trouble-free. We only learned that Lufthansa was working with Hugo Boss on a new uniform in August 2025, and extensive wear tests have been taking place for months.

Compare that timeline to some other airline uniform projects, including United Airlines, which spent eight years developing its new look, or Air New Zealand, which announced its uniform project six and a half years before it actually unveiled the collection.

Employees modeled the new threads at a runway show at a Lufthansa center in Frankfurt.
A new cape option is both a nod to the past and a vision of the future.

Then there’s the case of Delta Air Lines, which tapped Gap Inc in 2022 to design a new uniform but had to go back to the drawing board when the designs were trashed by employees.

To many people, the new Lufthansa uniform might seem a little plain, a little boring, and a little uninspiring. What you have to consider, though, is that Lufthansa has settled on a look that defines its image.

Much in the same way that after its experiment with the now infamous ‘passport plum’ uniforms, Delta is now reverting to its classic and much-loved wrap dresses in the airline’s red and blue hues.

Or the Dubai-based mega airline Emirates, which has had the same beige uniform for two decades and refuses to change it because, in the airline’s eyes, it’s a timeless collection that would be nearly impossible to beat.
