American Airlines’ New A321XLR Narrowbodies Will Spread Their Wings to Amsterdam, Nice, Porto, and Vienna in 2027

American Airlines has just announced its summer schedule for 2027, and while executives at the carrier remain pretty cautious towards international expansion, there are some nice additions to American’s overseas network, including non-stop flights from Philadelphia to Vienna, Austria – an entirely new route for American.

Other new routes from Philadelphia include Porto, Portugal, and Reykjavik, Iceland, while New York JFK will get non-stop flights to Amsterdam, Netherlands, Nice, France, and a fourth daily flight to London Heathrow.

Meanwhile, Charlotte gets a non-stop service to Barcelona, Spain, and Chicago O’Hare will get the longest addition to American’s network as part of Thursday’s announcement with a new daily service to Tokyo Narita, Japan.

Let’s be honest, American’s summer 2027 schedule is going to seem pretty lackluster compared to United, which, just two days ago, unveiled 10 new international destinations for next summer alone. Nor is American’s international network going to be as far-reaching as that of Delta Air Lines, after years of retreat.

What we are beginning to see, though, is American’s newest long-haul jet, the Airbus A321XLR narrowbody, beginning to spread its wings.

This summer, the aircraft has operated summer seasonal routes to Edinburgh, Scotland, while in 2027, the aircraft will continue to serve Edinburgh from New York FK, while also operating the following flights to Europe:

• Philadelphia to Vienna from May 6
• Philadelphia to Porto, Portugal from March 8
• New York JFK to Amsterdam, Netherlands from March 28
• New York JFK to Nice, France from March 28

Notably, Vienna is the ‘gamble’ as American Airlines will become the only U.S.-based airline to operate to the Austrian capital, although the carrier positions it as a strengthening of its central European network, given that the airline has already launched flights to Budapest, Hungary, and Prague, Czechia.

Disappointingly, though, American Airlines is utilising these narrowbody A321XLRs on popular routes that were once served by widebody aircraft. What many had hoped was that these new planes would be utilised to open up new long-haul destinations that wouldn’t necessarily support the capacity of a widebody plane.

For example, American admits that Amsterdam is a “time-tested vacation destination,” although the new route from New York JFK will bolster existing widebody summer seasonal service from Dallas-Fort Worth, and year-round service from Philadelphia.
