We all know that flying can be stressful, but for nervous passengers, the experience can be completely overwhelming. An anxiety or panic attack at 35,000 feet can be completely debilitating, and intervention is often needed to stop someone from being completely overwhelmed.

A Delta Air Lines flight attendant has now gone viral after she sat with a passenger having an anxiety attack on a recent flight, calmly talking the nervous flyer through a breathing technique to calm their frayed nerves.

Flight Attendant’s Calm Act Goes Viral

Caught on camera by another passenger on the flight, her extraordinary calmness and kind nature has now gone viral in a TikTok video that has already been watched more than 3 million times.

“This flight attendant was remarkable on Delta,” the woman who filmed the incident wrote in a caption on the video. “The guy in front of me was having an anxiety attack, and she sat with him and talked him through it – absolutely amazing,” the caption continued.

“Well done!”

“That’s My Mom!” Flight Attendant’s Son Reacts to Video

The power of the internet meant that it wasn’t long before the video had been seen by the flight attendant’s family, and her son commented on the video, saying:

“That’s my mom! She’s been a flight attendant for years, but more than that, she’s always been someone who genuinely cares about people,” he wrote. “Helping others is just who she is, so proud to see the world recognize that!”

Another Delta flight attendant also commented on the video, saying that they were going to let managers at the Atlanta-based carrier know so that she could be recognized for her act of kindness.

The image of the flight attendant holding the passenger’s hand was shared around the world – and again, Delta was urged to recognize the crew members for his kindness.

According to some studies, around 40% of the US population suffers from a fear of flying, which is technically known as aviophobia. Although most people overcome their fear, around 5% of the population are so overwhelmed with fear that they simply refuse to get on a plane.

Fear of Flying Courses Could Help Nervous Flyers

Recent high-profile incidents, such as the crash of the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner on June 12 and the tragic loss of American Airlines flight AA5342 over the Potomac River in January, have led to anxiety levels amongst nervous flyers on the rise.

British low-cost airline EasyJet has run a Fearless Flying course for years, helping nervous flyers who are scared at the thought of stepping on a plane, so that they simply refuse to travel.

The course boasts a 95% success rate and has helped more than 13,000 people overcome their fear of flying since 2012.

British Airways runs a similar course, which is also said to be highly effective, although no commercial airline in the United States has anything comparable for nervous flyers.

  • Yes, this type of course is invaluable in helping nervous flyers. Years ago, one of the airlines ran such a course out of Logan Airport in Boston. (I believe it was USAIR). If memory services me, they first had a classroom session on the ground, and then went on a flight that circled around the airport. It was there the pilots could explain all the different sounds they were hearing, and in simple terms, how the plane worked. I had tried to sign up for this course but it sold out quickly so I never got to do it.
