Australian Police Charge Two People For ‘Joyriding’ a Baggage Carousel Because it Allegedly Threatened Airport Security

Australian police have charged two people with entering a security-restricted area of an airport after a 14-year-old boy was allegedly encouraged to go ‘joyriding’ on a baggage carousel at Canberra Airport.

The two suspects, both of whom are from Queensland, had just arrived in Canberra when the joyriding incident took place. Police allege that security could have been compromised because the boy entered a security-restricted zone while riding the belt.

Canberra Airport Group contacted the Australian Federal Police about the July 2 incident, and police were waiting to arrest the pair when they returned to the airport on Sunday to catch their return flight home.

Police stopped a 58-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy and seized a mobile phone which is said to have video footage of the crime on it.

“Airport security is no joke, and restrictions exist to ensure the safety and security of the travelling public and workers,” commented Detective Acting Inspector Jon Horrocks from the AFP.

“Canberra Airport Group, the AFP and industry partners take any security breaches at airports seriously, and people can be prosecuted if they commit a criminal offence,” Horrocks continued.

The pair were charged with entering a security-restricted area at a designated airport, and the man is due to appear in court on October 3.
