It appears as if Qatar Airways is planning to resume flights to Philadelphia in the not-too-distant future, as it becomes increasingly clear that its important codeshare partner, American Airlines, has no intention of returning to Doha from its Pennsylvania hub anytime soon.
Qatar Airways last flew between Doha and Philadelphia, but it suspended its service when American Airlines took on the route, allowing Qatar Airways to add an additional daily service to New York JFK.

The daily flight from Philadelphia to Doha had proved incredibly successful, with many passengers transiting through on connecting flights to Lahore, Dhaka, Kathmandu, and Islamabad.
Qatar Airways has, however, lost access to these transit passengers because American Airlines suspended its Philadelphia to Doha service on February 28, when the U.S. and Israel launched a military campaign against Iran.
Since then, American Airlines has shown no interest in resuming the service, and the latest information suggests that the carrier won’t return to the Middle East, including Tel Aviv, until January 2027 at the earliest.
While Qatar Airways hasn’t yet formally announced its plans, eagle-eyed aviation reporter Ishrion Aviation noticed that Qatar Airways has started hiring various airport roles at Philadelphia International Airport, including service agents, duty supervisors, and a station manager.
It goes without saying that an airline only hires these kinds of roles if it is going to actually operate flights to the destination.
Not only is the Philadelphia route important for feeding passengers into Qatar Airways’ route network beyond Doha, but it also feeds passengers across American’s domestic route network.
Following years of acrimony between the two oneworld alliance airlines, in 2022, the two carriers settled their years-long dispute and created a codeshare agreement, which grew to become the largest in the airline industry.
When American Airlines first announced that it planned to launch non-stop flights to Doha, commentators questioned whether the route would ever go ahead. In the end, however, it surpassed all expectations, with the flight regularly selling out.
American Airlines initially launched its route to Doha from New York JFK before transitioning the start point to Philadelphia after Qatar Airways was able to secure an additional landing slot in New York.
Prior to the start of the Iran conflict, more than 500 passengers per day were connecting from American Airlines domestic flights onto flights headed to Doha – either with Qatar Airways or on American’s own flight from Philadelphia.
