United Airlines Flight Attendant ‘Rants’ at First Class Passengers About How Her Black Coworker Put On a Lifejacket During the Safety Demo

A post on X by chef and food writer Marta Rivera is going viral after she said a United Airlines flight attendant went on a ‘rant’ about another crew member with passengers in First Class, accusing her Black coworker of not demonstrating how to put on the lifejacket properly during the pre-flight safety demonstration.

This might seem like an inconsequential issue, but, according to Marta, the lead flight attendant on United flight UA-2844 from Chicago O’Hare to San Antonio was so incensed with the apparent violation of safety protocols that she was going to report her coworker to bosses.

Rather than keeping this issue strictly confidential, however, Marta claims the flight attendant went to great lengths to tell the passengers sitting in 1A and 1B that she was going to report her coworker, and at one point showed them her phone with an email draft of her complaint.

“If you were the Black flight attendant on United flight 2844 from ORD to SAT on June 15 at 1303 and your ‘lead’ flight attendant sent an email complaining about how you demonstrated putting on the life vest, feel free to DM me,” Marta wrote in a post on X on Tuesday, which has already been viewed more than 600,000 times.

“I sat through her ranting to the passengers in 1A-B and telling them she was going to do it. I sent an email to United telling them how instigatory, unprofessional, and inattentive she was because of it, but I still haven’t heard back,” Marta wrote in a follow-up post.

In reply to one person’s comment, Marta said the lead flight attendant was apparently enraged with how quickly her coworker had taken off her lifejacket during the demonstration. According to Marta, however, that doesn’t track with what she saw, saying:

“She had it on the whole time, went through the unpacking, strapping, inflating, and all that like normal. Nothing was off. I just think she had an axe to grind or wanted to flirt with the passengers.”

“She thought she was going to set up a Black woman and ridicule her for no reason whatsoever!?!?” Marta wrote, attaching a meme with the words: “NOT ON MY WATCH.”

Some commentators questioned why the lead flight attendant would report her coworker straight to management when United crew members are unionized and, therefore, have access to union professional standards groups that allow flight attendants to raise concerns about their colleagues without going straight to their bosses.

These programs allow flight attendants to confidentially raise concerns and access support services, mediaton and conflict resolution without raising a formal complaint with the airline.

Lead flight attendants at United Airlines are not technically the boss of the other crew members on the flight. They are all equal, but the lead crew member is responsible for any paperwork, liaising with the pilots and the ground staff, and working in domestic First Class.

Due to the extra responsibilities, lead flight attendants earn slightly more money when they are acting in this capacity, but they are not expected to ‘supervise’ their coworkers.

  • that’s an FA that obviously takes her position of ‘lead’ too seriously….and probably already had beef with the other FA that she felt she could get her in trouble
