The Trump Administration is Already Pinning the Blame for the Demise of Spirit Airlines On Democrats

The Trump administration is already signalling that it will place the blame for the collapse of Spirit Airlines squarely at the feet of Democrats if last-ditch talks to save the beleaguered ultra-low-cost carrier end in failure.

Spirit Airlines is currently locked in talks with the federal government about a potential multi-million-dollar taxpayer-funded bailout, which could see the United States take an equity stake in the Florida-based carrier.

If Spirit Airlines should fall into liquidation, the Trump administration wants it to be known that it isn’t to blame.

Whether or not the government will step up to provide Spirit, says it desperately needs to survive, however, remains very much up in the air… unlike the airline’s planes, should a deal not be reached.

Spirit’s argument for a government bailout is that it was within touching distance of exiting a painful Chapter 11 bankruptcy process this Spring but the soaring cost of jet fuel, caused by the US conflict with Iran, has left its plans in tatters.

A group of low-cost airlines are set to hold talks with the White House on Tuesday to discuss recent developments, including the dire situation at Spirit, and whether there is scope for taxypayer funded handouts to ease the pain they are currently experiencing.

The situation is most precarious for Spirit, which was already operating on a razor-thin margin before the cost of jet fuel started to surge.

Spirit went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a year in August 2025, after it quickly burned through the cash it acquired during a pre-packaged bankruptcy process in late 2024.

During the bankruptcy process, Spirit has faced down rumors of its imminent demise, but in February, chief executive Dave Davis announced that a major deal had been struck with creditors that could allow Spirit to emerge from Chapter 11 as early as this Spring.

The current crisis facing Spirit is being framed around the cost of jet fuel, but the White House wants it to be known that the failure of Spirit should be traced back to the Biden administration.

In 2023, the Department of Justice under the previous administration sued to stop a planned merger between Spirit and JetBlue.

The argument by the DOJ to stop the merger in its tracks was that JetBlue’s motive to buy up Spirit was simply to acquire its fleet of airplanes, closing down the Spirit brand and ending the low fares that it had provided to low-income Americans.

In January 2024, a federal judge ruled in favor of the DOJ, essentially forcing Spirit to fend for itself, despite the increasingly poor financial situation it had found itself in.

What both administrations can agree on, though, is that Spirit’s demise would be bad for consumers and would likely drive up airfares in multiple markets.

For now, Spirit continues to fly, and talks are still ongoing, not only with the federal government, but also with private creditors, in an attempt to secure additional funds for the airline to see it through this period of higher jet fuel prices.
